Hoboken Water Main Breaks, Emergency Repairs Needed

VIDEO: Dozens of Hoboken residents saw service interruptions after a 12-inch main broke, Suez Water stated.

HOBOKEN, NJ -- A water main break in Hoboken left dozens of residents without service on Sunday, officials said.

The break took place at 7th and Adams. The water continues to meet drinking standards, according to Suez Water.

"Crews continue to make emergency repairs to a 12-inch main on 7th between Grand and Jefferson," Suez officials wrote Sunday. "Approximately 40 customers are affected at this time."

According to hMAG, the break created a sinkhole that "swallowed a tree."

"Residences appear to be pumping out water," hMAG reported (see below video).

Hoboken Mayor Ravinder Bhalla said that the break is a "scene that happens too often." He stated on Twitter:

"Some water mains are 100+ yrs old. Fortunately, we’re in final stages of new contract w/ SUEZ - $33M in main upgrades over 15 yrs, $1.5M/yr in proactive replacements. Won’t solve problem overnight, but makes unprecedented investments we need."
