Hoboken Woman's Cell Phone Snatched While Facetiming With Mom

HOBOKEN, NJ —Hoboken police have charged a 19-year-old Passaic man for theft and conspiracy to commit theft after a Hoboken woman said she was talking to her mom on her phone in the evening, and someone snatched the device.

According to details from the police, on June 10, at 6:51 p.m., police officers Shelby Seickendick and Officer Michael Aviles responded to the area of Fifth and Jefferson streets to meet up with a victim of a theft.

A woman told them that as she was talking with her mother on FaceTime, her cellphone was snatched out of her hand by a male on a bicycle.

She said the incident occurred in the area of Eighth and Clinton streets (which is near CVS, a fire station, and Hoboken High School.)

The female victim yelled out to a nearby bicyclist for help, but she then believed the actor and the bicyclist were together, according to the police.

Through investigation, Lt Michael Costello apprehended a suspect in the area of 15th and Willow Avenue. Police say the second male had fled the area.

The apprehended man was identified as Jose Cereno-Delrio, 19, from Passaic.

Police says the victim’s cellphone was found in the area of 16th and Clinton streets on the ground.

Police say that before that incident, the police received a call at about 6:25 p.m. about a theft committed by two individuals on bicycles. Officer Kyle Seper responded and met with the victim in the area of Seventh and Hudson streets. The victim reported that he was checking the weather forecast on his cellphone when a male on a bicycle snatched his cellphone out of his hands.

The victim stated that there was a second bicyclist with the alleged actor. Through investigation, police determined that Jose Cereno-Delrio was a suspect.

Jose Cereno-Delrio was charged with one count for each incident resulting in two counts of theft and two counts of conspiracy to commit theft. His charges were placed on a warrant and he was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility Jail.

Police said that the second person will get the same charges if they can identify him.
