Hoboken Offered Free Trash Cans To Fight Rats. Here's How Many They Gave Away

Hoboken has started a program to give away free lidded trash cans in the fight against rats. There are several dates left to claim yours.

HOBOKEN, NJ — In its effort to combat a growing rat problem, the city of Hoboken recently passed a series of measures including demanding tight-fitting lids on garbage cans. In order to help residents and businesses comply, the city announced it will give away 3,500 garbage containers starting this week.

On the first day of giveaway, Monday, they distributed 700 of them, the city said.

The city noted these upcoming giveaway times:

  • Sept. 26, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. – Multi-Service Center hockey rink, on Adams Street between First and Second streets
  • Sept. 28, 2 p.m.-7 p.m. – 13th & Jefferson streets
  • Sept. 30, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. – former Union Dry Dock site, 901 Sinatra Drive

The containers are given away on a first come, first served basis.

"The city has also extended the containerization compliance grace period, which will now end on Oct. 8," the city noted in a message. "After which, properties that are not in compliance with the ordinance could be subject to fines."
