Hudson County Jail Struggling With Staffing Issues, Report Says

A decreasing number of correctional officers are willing to take on the job at the Hudson County Correctional Facility, a report says.

HOBOKEN, NJ — The inmate population is going down at the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny. But a decreasing number of correctional officers are willing to take on the job, a report says.

The Hudson County Corrections Department has about 100 unfilled corrections officer positions, NJ.com reported Wednesday.

Jail administrators are relying heavily on overtime to keep the prison staffed. A major issue is that the county can’t find enough qualified applicants, an official told NJ.com. A correctional officer starts at $35,000 in Hudson County, which an official said “increases fairly rapidly” and is “competitive with most other counties.”
