On Thursday, Superintendent of Schools Christine Johnson stated that the district has been getting some questions as to whether or not New Jersey public schools have to close when the governor declares a State of Emergency.

“The governor’s declaration does not automatically close schools or state offices,” Johnson wrote. “However, it does authorize the governor to make decisions to do so or to limit access in affected areas if need be. At this time, the governor has not announced limitations or required closings. Therefore, our schools are open.”

“In addition, whenever there is a declared State of Emergency in New Jersey or a potentially problematic weather forecast, the Hoboken School District works closely with the local Office of Emergency Management and our Mayors Office to make a decision regarding the opening or closing of our schools that is in the best interest of safety,” Johnson added.
“If there is any announcement regarding the status of our schools, you will receive a robocall and accompanying text and e-mail. In addition, up to date information will always be posted on our website,” she said.
