Ice Cream Shop In Hoboken Closes Suddenly

HOBOKEN, NJ — If you scream for ice cream this summer, don't expect to stop into the Hoboken location of Il Laboratorio del Gelato.

The ice cream and dessert shop — founded by Jon Snyder in Manhattan in 2002 — opened at Fifth and Washington streets in 2022. But it closed on July 7, Snyder confirmed for Patch.

The expanding chain has tried out hundreds of flavors and is still expanding into new areas, but not in Hoboken.

"A crazy number of frozen dessert places have opened," Snyder said, "following our lead, I suppose, in the past two years. Even though we consider ourselves a class unto ourselves, it just wasn't sustainable."

Among the competitors, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream opened across the street last year.

But Snyder is expanding in other areas, opening a shop on New York's Upper East Side recently, he said.
