Indoor Pool In Hudson County Now Has Retractable Roof
The Pershing Field Indoor Pool in Jersey City Heights, open to city residents and non-residents alike, now has a retractable roof.
JERSEY CITY, NJ — After being unusable for 20 years, a newly working retractable roof was unveiled at the Pershing Field Pool in Jersey City Heights on May 4. The six-lane pool is open year round, seven days a week, to Jersey City residents and non-residents alike, although non-residents pay higher fees (see fee list below).
The indoor pool is located within the 13-acre Pershing Field Memorial Park along Central Avenue in The Heights.
The new roof at the pool was part of a series of major improvements at Pershing Field Park, including upgrades to the playground, roller skating/ice rink, and ADA adjustments.

In 2021, Mayor Steven Fulop committed to fixing the retractable roof to increase airflow and enhance swimmers’ experience while utilizing the public pool. The retractable features also allows for more ventilation, a benefit during the pandemic.

“The retractable roof is a unique feature," Fulop said, "that we hope will entice even more residents to utilize the pool and other public spaces within Pershing Field and around the city.”
The $170,000 in roof reconstruction included the replacement of main cables, fasteners, pulleys, and motors, among other necessary repairs. A new mesh roof was also installed to keep out debris, such as falling leaves.
Adjacent to the pool is the historic Reservoir 3, a 14-acre site that is being improved with money from Jersey City’s Open Space Trust Fund.
The Pershing Field Indoor Pool is a 25-meter long pool that runs from 3.5 feet to 12 feet deep. It's open all year round.
