Lady Redwings Continue Winning Ways

The Redwings knocked off Bayonne High School Friday afternoon, a good way to head into Saturday's HCT semifinals.

The Redwings continue to dominate the Hudson County Division A regular season, as they knocked off Bayonne High School 4-1 on Friday afternoon. With the win, Hoboken improves to 17-2 on the season. Bayonne is now 8-13.

Hoboken jumped out of the gates in the first, as Jayla Vega led off with a solo home-run on a 1-1 count. Following an out, Ashley Barron walked and Amanda Spano reached on a single. Two batters later, Samantha Maldonado earned a walk to keep the inning alive. Nicolette Martinez took advantage of the opportunity, lining a two-RBI double down the first base line.

The Bees took one back on a throwing error in the top of the fourth. Second baseman Yaritza Santiago overthrew first on an attempted 6-4-3 double play.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hoboken added one more on a Spano RBI sacrifice fly for the 4-1 advantage.

"This was good," Coach Carmine Ronga said, "We're coming off a tremendous win over North Bergen, and with High Tech ahead of us, you worry that they'll come out flat. But they learned today, you better pay attention to everyone."

In their first meeting of the season, Hoboken defeated Bayonne 20-9 in Bayonne.

"It was tough after the first game," BHS Coach Sam Maggio said, "They're always a good hitting team, and I think they'll surprise some teams if they continue to hit."

Redwings' starter Vega struck out seven and walked four while striking out four. The Bees' only run was unearned. Santiago came in to pitch the seventh, retiring the side with three quick outs, including a strike out. Bees starting pitcher Samantha Maggio struck out five, walked two and allowed six hits over seven innings.

At the plate, Hoboken's top hitters were Renee Zabaleta (2-3), Martinez (1-3, 2 RBI), and Vega (1-3, 1 RBI).

Santiago will take the mound Saturday against High Tech. Hoboken lost the first meeting of the season with High Tech, but this time the stakes are higher. It is the Hudson County Tournament semifinal. The game is set for noon in Hoboken.

"We're as ready as we'll ever be," Ronga says.
