Let There Be Light: Hoboken Goes Energy Efficient At 11 Buildings

The project saved Hoboken taxpayers more than $200K on capital costs and will save $100K on energy costs each year, city officials said.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Let there be light, Hoboken.

On Thursday, Hoboken officials announced that the city has completed the installation of energy efficient equipment at 11 municipal buildings. The “comprehensive project,” which used incentives from New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program, saved taxpayers more than $200,000 on the capital costs of energy efficiency upgrades and will save about $100,000 on energy costs each year, officials stated.

“Promoting smarter energy policies in our city buildings while saving taxpayers $100,000 each year is a win-win for Hoboken,” Mayor Ravi Bhalla said.

According to Hoboken city officials:

“Energy upgrades were installed in City Hall, the Public Works Garage, Fire Engine Companies 1, 2, and 3, the Fire Exempt Hall/Fire Department Museum, Midtown Garage, Fire Engine Company 4, the Ambulance Corps and Parking Garages B, D, and G. These upgrades include LED energy efficient lighting, as well as high-efficiency heating and cooling systems.”

City officials said that the upgrades were recommended by energy assessments completed by Lime Energy through the Direct Install program offered by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program, which makes investments in energy efficiency upgrades for local governments.

Officials pointed out that Hoboken also recently completed the installation of upgraded LED lighting in Church Square Park thanks to a Sustainable Jersey Small Grant funded by The Gardinier Environmental Fund. All lights in Church Square Park were replaced with energy efficient LED fixtures, and are superior to traditional fixtures in efficiency, lifespan, durability and maintenance.

Bhalla thanked the Hoboken Green Team and Director Jen Gonzalez for helping to advance energy efficiency in the Mile Square City.

“Hoboken is leading the way in green initiatives that not only reduces our carbon footprint and impact on our local environment, but also saves energy costs and reduces the burden on taxpayers,” the mayor said.
