ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Eight towns in western Essex County are joining together to combat car thefts and other crimes that have plagued the towns recently. They plan to support legislation to better address the crimes.
Roseland Mayor James Spango is spearheading the coalition, which will also include Livingston, Caldwell, West Caldwell, Essex Fells, North Caldwell, Roseland, and Millburn.
"The coalition is part of an ongoing effort to prioritize public safety legislation using a collective voice and discuss other potential collaboration with surrounding communities," they said.

The town also works with the administration of The Mall at Short Hills to discuss upgrades to their security and technology.
Several bills have passed the State Senate that will address crime trends. One bill will impose long jail time and stiff penalties for those who recruit juveniles to commit auto theft crimes. These crimes will be considered crimes of the first-degree with a prison term of 10-20 years and the possibility of a fine up to $200,000.
Three other bills passed in the Senate will expand the criminal penalty for various crimes. Senate bill S3390 will upgrade the illegal possession of a key fob that operates someone else's vehicle.
The coalition will also focus on the recent rise in home break-ins.
