Local Writer Alan Skontra Releases New Book About Hoboken

Alan Skontra, a local writer and Hoboken resident had his "Legendary Locals of Hoboken" book release party last night at Biggie's Clam Bar on Newark St.  The book, a first for Alan is 125 pages and filled with the history of Hoboken, from the days of the old Turtle Club to current day living.  The book, published by Arcadia Publishing is a soft cover coffee table book filled with pictures and captions of everything popular Hoboken then and now.

Included in the book are pictures of Franklin Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson boarding the Hoboken based S.S. Washington in 1918 for a cruise to Paris for a press conference.  Other notables mentioned in the book are Blind Tom Wiggins, former  slave turned performer who called Hoboken, NJ his home.  Frank Sinatra, Artie Lange, G Gordon Liddy, Joe Pantoliano, John Cox Stevens and more round out some of the more notable names that have distinct heritage to Hoboken.

In later chapters the people in the book are current Hoboken residents, business owners, philanthropists and visitors.  The book also focuses on art in Hoboken, local Hoboken music, local business and local charities.

The book is in black and white and gives off a very nostalgic look to it.  A fun read for anyone in Hoboken.

Last night's event at Biggie's on Newark Street was packed to the gills with the book being offered for sale by the author, Alan Skontra.  Copies are just $22.  All in attendance last night got their copies signed and many of those in attendance were in the book and happy to walk around and share with others in the book as well.  Many in attendance bought several copies of the book to give to friends and family.  By the end of the night all but a handful of the 200 books on hand had been sold.

The book is available at legendarylocals.com or by calling 888-313-2665.  The book can also be purchased at arcadiaprinting.com.
