HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken police arrested a Union City man after an alleged burglary spree on Jackson Street last week, authorities said.

According to the Hoboken Police Department, officers responded to the area of 301 Jackson Street on Jan. 16 after receiving a report of a burglary. On arrival, officers saw the front glass, ceiling tiles and ATM of a local business damaged.

Further investigation revealed damage to the outside of the property, as well as other nearby businesses. Then, while searching for further damage inside the building, officers came across Benny Rameraz, 30, of Union City, who was allegedly trying to flee the premises, police said.

Authorities said that Rameraz – clad in a construction jacket – allegedly tried to break into the building through the roof and unsuccessfully attempted to steal cash from a pizzeria’s ATM, ABC News reported.

He then allegedly tried to use a fire extinguisher to break out through the front door, but was unable to get past the rolldown gate and became trapped. That was when he climbed back up into the ceiling area and made his way through several other stores in the building, ultimately drinking a bottle of liquor he stole from one business and falling asleep in a dollar store, ABC News reported.
