Free Music, Fishing, And Hoboken Waterfront Tours At 'City Of Water Day' Saturday

HOBOKEN, NJ — City of Water Day, an event meant to raise awareness and appreciation of the river, environmental issues, and climate change, takes place in Hoboken Saturday, with a range of activities including tours, fishing, and live music.

The events start at 9 a.m. at Maxwell Place Park at upper Sinatra Drive (where 11th Street would extend), near the Shipyard playground.

"City of Water Day on the Hoboken Waterfront will feature free fun for all ages," say organizers, "including hands-on environmental science, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, waterfront tours, art and music to celebrate Hoboken’s public waterfront park and raise awareness about the impact ofclimate change on our Hudson River shoreline."

9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • Experience hands-on environmental science with Resilience Adventures. Put on some hip waders and investigate what we find with catch and release nets.
  • Discover oyster habitats in the NY Harbor with the NY/NJ Baykeeper.
  • Learn about the effects of climate change on our water quality, watersheds and human health with Montclair State University’s Traveling HAB (Harmful Algal Blooms) Lab.
  • Make a mural of Hoboken’s waterfront wildlife with local artists Ann Marshall and Marni Fylling.

9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

  • Tour the Hoboken waterfront with FBW Executive Director Ron Hine to learn the latest about the City’s Sinatra Drive Project. Meet at 11th Street and Sinatra Drive North at 9 a.m.

9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Fish off the Castle Point fishing pier (just south of the Union Dry Dock site on the central waterfront) with the Hudson River Fishermen’s Association. Bait, reels, and rods provided.

11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • Get into the protected Hoboken Cove of the Hudson River via kayak or stand-up paddle board with the Hoboken Cove Community Boathouse Ke Aloha Outrigger: https://sites.google.com/hobok...

1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Take a guided tour of Hoboken’s waterfront via kayak with the Hoboken Historical Museum and Resilience Adventures. Reservations required.

1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

  • Enjoy the vibes of vibraphonist Gus Hurteau.

All Hoboken activities are free. The umbrella groups sponsoring City of Water Day throughout the metropolitan area are the Waterfront Alliance and the NY/NJ Harbor & Estuary Program. City of Water Day seeks to raise awareness about the risk we all face from flooding and rising seas, and to champion climate resilient shorelines and waterfrontcommunities.
