HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken police charged an East Orange woman with multiple counts of aggravated assault after she allegedly became violent during an arrest last week and spat in the face of an EMT, authorities said.

According to the Hoboken Police Department, the incident took place around 2:49 a.m. on March 31 near River and Newark streets.

After getting a report of a woman assaulting and spitting at several people, officers arrived at the scene where they saw Jannah Asante, 22, of East Orange, punch a pedestrian, police said.

Officers attempted to arrest Asante, but she began to resist. After a short struggle they placed handcuffs on her, but as they led Asante to a patrol car, she kicked one of the officers in the chest, authorities stated.

At police headquarters, Asante allegedly “became combative” so officers placed her in a cell. But as they turned to leave, she charged at them, grabbing one cop’s neck. While attempting to restrain Asante, the officer sustained a minor injury, authorities said.

Due to Asante’s “erratic behavior,” police called for medical assistance. While waiting for EMTs, she kicked her legs and tried to strike an officer’s hands as he tried to secure her, causing another minor injury, police said.

Later, as emergency responders were transporting her to the hospital, Asante allegedly spat in the face of an EMT, authorities said.

After she was released from the hospital, police charged Asante with two counts of 3rd degree aggravated assault on a police officer, two counts of 4th degree aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated assault on an EMT, resisting arrest and simple assault.
