Veolia Water said around 6:57 a.m. that the 16-inch break was between Observer Highway and Garden Street, near the city's southern border with Jersey City.

Residents as far as a mile away, at the north end of the city, reported being without water. Some expressed anger while others joked.

Water main breaks in Hoboken have become a periodic occurrence as the city fixes the roads and 100-year-old combined sewer system. The city said that in 2021, "Hoboken had a total of 12 water main breaks, almost half the total of water main breaks in 2020."
