Orlando Shooting: One World Trade Center Displays Rainbow Colors In Mourning

The rainbow glow at One World Trade Center honored the victims of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

The rainbow glow at One World Trade Center wasn’t a substitute for tears, but it did serve as a measure of just how deeply a horrific mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, has touched the hearts of America.

After this weekend’s tragic shooting, New York government officials decided to express their sympathy for victims and their loved ones by programming the spire of One World Trade Center to display the colors of the LGBT flag.

"In this state, we believe that no matter your race, creed, color, gender identity or expression you have the right live your life free from persecution and prejudice," said New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The early Sunday attack is being described as the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

The shooting took place at Pulse Orlando Night Club & Ultra Lounge, a popular gay bar, where about 350 people were dancing and drinking.

Sunday's death toll far surpassed an attack at Virginia Tech in 2007, where 33 were killed, as well as high-profile attacks at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in 2013, where 28 died, and a mass shooting that killed 14 in San Bernardino, Calif., last December.

The victims reportedly included a former New Jersey resident who went to high school and worked in the Garden State.

In New Jersey, Gov. Chris Christie and U.S. Sen. Cory Booker were among those to publicly express their sympathies in the wake of the disaster.

Other New Jersey emergency response and LGBT rights organizations added their sympathies to the growing list of mourners.
