Parents Indicted In Toddler Girl's Death In Hudson County: Prosecutor

The father and mother of a 2-year-old girl were indicted in connection with her death, prosecutors say.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — A father and mother have been arrested after they were indicted in connection with their 2-year-old daughter's 2022 death in Hudson County, prosecutors say.

Luis Larios, 35, and Tracy Ruiz, 31, both of Green Brook, N.J., in Somerset County, were indicted by a grand jury late last month.

Ruiz has been charged with second-degree aggravated assault and two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, said the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office. She was arrested at the Hudson County Administration Building in Jersey City on Thursday, March 7.

Larios, 35 is charged with endangering the welfare of a child. He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus on Thursday, Feb. 29.

Prosecutors said that on July 7, 2022, the North Bergen Police Department was notified of an injured juvenile inside of a residence of Dane Court in that town.

Police found an unresponsive 2-year-old girl on the floor of a bedroom in an apartment.

She was taken by Emergency Medical Services to Hackensack University Medical Center in critical condition.

Sixteen days later, on July 23, she was pronounced dead.

Prosecutors said, "During the course of the investigation, it was determined the child sustained traumatic injuries."

Three additional children had lived in the apartment, prosecutors said, "which was in an unsanitary condition."

Prosecutors did not state where the other children were taken.
