PATH Train Alert: No Service Between Newark and Journal Square On Tuesday Morning

PATH service between Newark and Journal Square will remain suspended through Tuesday morning’s 6 to 10 a.m. commute, Port Authority administrators announced on Monday afternoon.

The continued suspension comes despite the efforts of about 650 PATH workers and contractors, who have been working to clear snow from tracks, third rails, signals and switches, which were “inundated by snow drifts ranging from four to 16 feet during the weekend blizzard,” according to Port Authority officials.

NJ Transit will continue cross-honoring PATH tickets on its trains and buses at Newark Penn Station during the afternoon and Tuesday morning commutes, while adding limited shuttle bus operations Tuesday morning in both directions between Newark Penn Station-Journal Square and Harrison Station-Journal Square, officials stated.

Commuters are cautioned the extra bus service will not provide the typical capacity provided on eight-car PATH trains.

Service between Newark and Journal Square is expected to resume in time for Tuesday afternoon’s commute, officials stated.

During the Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning commute, passengers will not be able to access PATH trains at either the Newark Penn or Harrison stations, with Journal Square serving as the temporary western terminus of the rail line, official said.

PATH will continue operating service on four lines, with service between Journal Square and the World Trade Center, Journal Square to 33rd Street, Hoboken to the World Trade Center and Hoboken to 33rd Street.

NJ Transit will cross-honor PATH tickets at Newark Penn Station, subject to operating limitations because NJ Transit also is “experiencing difficulties with storm-related clean-up activities,” Port Authority officials stated.

NJ Transit operates service between Newark and Penn Station New York, and between Newark and Hoboken, Port Authority officials stated.

NJ Transit buses also will accept PATH rail tickets at Newark Penn Station, plus on Tuesday morning the additional buses – which will be provided by NJ Transit and paid for by the Port Authority – for travel in both directions between Newark Penn Station and Journal Square-Harrison Station and Harrison Station-Journal Square.
