Paying Tribute To Fallen Hoboken Police Officers

Who were the city's seven officers to die in the line of duty? Read about the fallen heroes here.

A Hoboken police officer hasn’t been killed in the line of duty since 1951.

But in the city’s history, there have been seven officers who died wearing their uniforms. These fallen officers were remembered during the department’s annual Awards Recognition Program on July 27.

The below information on the deceased officers comes courtesy of the Hoboken Police Department and the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Patrolman Thomas F. McIntyre

  • End Of Watch: Saturday, October 6, 1951
  • Cause of Death: Patrolman McIntyre was killed when his three-wheeled motorcycle struck a parked car as he responded to a call.

Patrolman Patrick J. Lane

  • End Of Watch: Friday, March 9, 1928
  • Cause of Death: Patrolman Lane was shot and killed while transporting two robbery suspects to the police station.

Patrolman Joseph M. Jaeger

  • End Of Watch: Sunday, July 6, 1924
  • Cause of Death: Patrolman Jaeger was killed in a motorcycle accident while responding to a call.

Patrolman William Gudehus

  • End Of Watch: Thursday, October 10, 1918
  • Cause of Death: Patrolman Gudehus was shot and killed when he attempted to stop two brothers from beating and robbing an old man. The two suspects overpowered Gudehus, beat him with his own baton, and then shot him with own service weapon.

Patrolman Bernard Murray

  • End Of Watch: Wednesday, October 2, 1918
  • Cause of Death: Patrolman Murray was shot and killed after responding to a call at 412 Madison Street. The complainant was upset because a 27-year-old man was dating her 16-year-old sister. When Murray arrived, the man shot and killed him.

Patrolman John J. Condon

  • End Of Watch: Friday, August 15, 1902
  • Cause of Death: Patrolman John Condon died after contracting spinal meningitis as the result of injuries sustained while struggling with a prisoner.

Patrolman Charles Gebhardt

  • End Of Watch: Tuesday, July 26, 1898
  • Cause of Death: Patrolman Gebhardt was shot and killed during a struggle with a suspect. Gebhardt was struggling with a suspected “Sneak Thief” at the corner of Bloomfield Street and Twelfth Street, when the suspect drew a revolver and shot him in the chest.
