As he walked north, he was removing contents from what appeared to be a cardboard box, according to a news release from Detective Vito Gigante.

When Rivera noticed the police car, he tried to discard the package at the curb, but held onto the contents -- which turned out to be four pairs of multi-colored women’s socks, worth about $30, police said.

Police got out of the car, stopped Rivera and examined the box, according to the news release. Police said the officers realized the name on the box was not Rivera’s - it belonged to a victim who lived nearby, on Willow Avenue.

Officers also found a steak knife, with a 5-inch blade, in Rivera’s jacket pocket, police said. Rivera was sent to the Hudson County Correctional Facility, with bail set at $20,000.
