HOBOKEN, NJ — The Hoboken City Council is scheduled to hold an introductory vote Wednesday night at 7 p.m. on a proposed $135 million budget to run the city in 2023, including a 7 percent tax increase. If the majority of the council votes to introduce the spending plan, it will go to a hearing and final vote at a future meeting.

The proposed tax increase equates to an estimated $13 a month for a property owner with an average assessed property of $526,800, a city spokesperson said.

The city will also vote on proposed modifications that follow up on recent changes to the city's 50-year-old Rent Control Ordinance. The ordinance was originally implemented in 1973 to keep tenants stable and allow landlords to pass along certain surcharges. While the council majority approved recent changes to the law, council members including Ruben Ramos Jr., and some longtime tenant advocates have said aspects of the changes need a closer look.

Ramos said that he had helped craft a "compromise proposal" but it was left off the March 1 council agenda. "I am hopeful that we can have a public hearing in the very near future," he said.
