'Shelter In Place' Lifted For Stevens Institute In Hoboken After Report Of Man With Weapon
The Hoboken police responded to reports of a man with a weapon near the Stevens Institute Monday morning, but orders have been lifted.
HOBOKEN, NJ — Late on Monday morning, police at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken lifted a "shelter in place" order they had issued to students at 9:03 a.m. because of police activity near the border of campus.
The Hoboken police said later on Tuesday that witnesses said a man had displayed a rifle during a construction dispute. (Read more about that here).
The police activity at 5th & Hudson has been resolved and the scene has been deemed safe. There were no injuries reported and @HobokenPD will put out further details once the investigation is completed.

The city then sent out a Nixle alert at 11:22 a.m., saying the activity was resolved.

Earlier in the day, at 9:03 a.m., the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken sent a message to their community saying to shelter in place because of police activity at Fifth and Hudson streets in the city.
About a half hour later, the city of Hoboken Tweeted that police were investigating reports of a "male with a weapon" (see earlier reporting below).

for not sending information to residents via Nixle alerts, an emergency update system, until an hour after Stevens issued its order. The city sent its first Nixle alert at 10:10 a.m.
"If Nixle alerts can go out every time it rains then there’s absolutely no reason an alert shouldn’t have been sent out for this," wrote a Twitter user. "This was during peak commuting time."

A message went out to the Stevens Institute of Technology community in Hoboken at 9:02 a.m. on Monday telling them to shelter in place because of "police activity" at Fifth and Hudson Streets.
The city of Hoboken did not sent a Nixle alert. But at 9:41 a.m., the city of Hoboken Tweeted that police were investigating reports of a man with a weapon:

At that location, three police officers were standing behind a residence on Court Street, between Fifth and Sixth street, and that block was cordoned off with police tape. On the other side of that row of homes, the block of Hudson Street from Fifth to Sixth was also cordoned off.
An ambulance was stationed at Fifth and Washington streets.
An officer told a passer by that there was a "situation," but the officer did not elaborate.
Earlier, the Hoboken police had Tweeted:
Police activity in the area between 5th to 6th on Hudson Street. Please avoid the area while our officers investigate.

The city sent out its first Nixle alert on the matter later, at 10:10 a.m., saying:
"The Hoboken Police Department asks that all residents avoid the area of 5th & 6th on Hudson Street, as there are reports of a male with a weapon."
