Sinkhole Opens On Sinatra Drive Near Hoboken Waterfront: PHOTOS

Police and work crews have blocked off one lane of Sinatra Drive on Hoboken's central waterfront as a deep sinkhole has opened up.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Police have closed off a section of the northbound lane of Frank Sinatra Drive, along Hoboken's waterfront, after a sinkhole opened up there Friday afternoon.

A worker was overheard Friday evening saying the pressure of the water had caused the hole to widen.

The hole opened hours before a brief thunderstorm drenched the area.

Other sinkholes have opened in Hoboken through the years, including one last year near ongoing water main work. The city is working to fix the century-old underground infrastructure.

In 2017, a sinkhole swallowed an SUV in the mile-square city.
