Hoboken Water Main Break: Service Restored For Many Residents

The water main break on the Hoboken/ Jersey City border affected water distribution to the entire city.

A water main break in Hoboken left residents without water for most of Sunday. Crews worked to fix a broken valve on a central transmission line at Newark and Harrison streets right on the Jersey City/Hoboken border.

As of 6:15 p.m., the city reported that service had been restored to many parts of Hoboken, however residents in high-rises may still experience limited or no water pressure. It is recommended that residents on the upper floors of high-rises turn on the cold water faucets so demand to the system is increased. Full pressure restoration is expected by Monday.

The city has provided emergency water tanks at six locations for residents to gather fresh drinking water. The trucks will remain available to residents until full service is restored.

  • Hoboken City Hall, 94 Washington Street
  • 76 Bloomfield Street
  • Third and Jackson Streets
  • 311 13th Street
  • Hoboken High School, 800 Clinton Street
  • 14th Street and Sinatra Drive

A boil water advisory remains in effect for residents until Monday at least. Residents in the Newport area of Jersey City also experienced a disruption in service, however water has since been restored. No boil water advisory is in effect for Jersey City.

Residents in Hoboken should boil water for at least one minute for the following activities:

  • Taking medication
  • Brushing teeth
  • Washing food
  • Mixing baby formula or food

Schools in Hoboken will be open Monday.

Hoboken Police Chief Ken Ferrante tweeted anyone entering or exiting the city should do so from the north side on Sunday and Monday due to numerous street closings in southwest Hoboken. Police will be directing traffic in the affected area during commuting hours.

The following road closures are expected to last until at least Monday afternoon:

  • Observer Highway is closed west of Henderson Street to Jersey Avenue, Vehicles traveling north on Jersey ave. will need to turn at 18th Street.
  • Harrison Street is closed from Paterson Avenue to Newark Street
  • Jackson Street is closed from Newark Street to Paterson Avenue

Repairs are expected to continue through the night and into tomorrow.

Hoboken residents expressed their frustration on Twitter while some chose to see the humor in the situation.
