HOBOKEN, NJ — The nine-member Hoboken City Council chose Councilwoman Emily Jabbour as the new council president at their meeting Wednesday night.

"I will do my best," Jabbour said, after taking the oath of office.

Jabbour promptly nominated outgoing Council President Michael Russo to become vice-president.

The vote for Jabbour was unanimous, but council members Tiffanie Fisher and Jennifer Giattino voted no for Russo. Fisher said that in an election year, the council typically doesn't choose someone running for election as the council's president or vice president.

All six ward council members are up for re-election this fall, including Russo.
