JERSEY CITY, NJ — Police found a baby girl deceased and a 41-year-old woman in need of medical attention early Saturday morning when they were called to a house in the Greenville Section of Jersey City, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office said. The woman was pronounced dead approximately 10 hours later at Jersey City Medical Center.

The Homicide Unit is investigating.

The Jersey City Police Department and Emergency Medical Services responded around 6 a.m. to 33 Suburbia Court in Jersey City on a report of a woman in need of medical attention, prosecutors said. Upon arrival, Jersey City Police Officers found "a 41-year-old female needing assistance as well as an unresponsive female infant," they said.

NJ. com reported Saturday morning that the child was found on a couch with an umbilical cord attached. They also reported that radio transmissions Saturday morning indicated that responders had found maggots, feces, and "needles all over the place" in the house. The story said the house was cited last year for health violations.

A subsequent NJ.com story said the woman and baby were found together on the couch that morning, and that sources indicated the woman was the infant's mother. The story also cited sources saying that "multiple" people had died in the house since last year, but this was not confirmed.

Mayor Steven Fulop Tweeted, "People ask all the time the hardest part about my job. It’s issues like this. We were here at this same house last year w/violations. The 'system' of local, county, state worked + yet here we are."

But one commenter was not impressed, responding, "What about follow up or enforcement?"
