2 COVID-19 Cases Shut Down In-Person Classes At Hazlet School

HAZLET, NJ – Two unrelated COVID-19 cases prompted one elementary school in Hazlet to suspend in-person instruction for two weeks, officials confirmed to Patch on Tuesday afternoon.

Raritan Valley School in Hazlet shut its doors to in-person learning on Monday, Oct. 5 following two separate reported COVID-19 cases. Students at the elementary school will remain remote until Friday, Oct. 16, according to superintendent Dr. Scott Ridley.

“Virtual instruction is now in effect,” said Ridley in an email to Patch. “Both positive cases were detected from outside the school system.”

According to an NJ.com report, district officials say that neither individual contracted the virus in the building, and administrators reached the decision to close the school after consulting with county and state health officials.

Another COVID-19 case was reported at Raritan High School last week, in which a student-athlete was allegedly exposed to the virus at an off-campus event.

The activity was not affiliated with Raritan High School or the district athletic program, principal Andrew R. Piotrowski, Ed.D. noted in a letter to district parents.
