Hi ladies. My name is Lisa and I have a part owner in a contracting company. I used to work at a "big box retailer", so my favorite part of the job was giving people the confidence to do some small beginner projects. You don't always have to call professionals like us. Once a week we will go through an easy project step by step. This week we are going to discuss holes in sheet rock . First thing is to observe the hole is it a nail hole or a break or maybe a complete hole. What size is it. The size determines the repair. Nail holes obviously are the easiest. They require just a small bucket of non shrinking joint compound " light weight". A 1" or 1 1/2" plastic putty knife should do nicely. The compound runs about 8 bucks for the quart size. The putty knife under 3 bucks usually for a kit . Wipe the hole clean for any paperlike residue so it's a clean and smooth surface. If you are patching a greasy kitchen wall you should clean it with a product called t.s.p. After you have a clean surface scoop a small amount on the putty knife. Less is definitely more with spackle it's better to do too little , than too much . Fill the hole with as little a possible. Think applying make up! Then smoothing about 1/ 8 of an inch out from the hole. This will take up to 4 hours to dry depending on the humidity. When it dries grab a sanding block to smooth out and return to a flat surface. Run your hand over to determine how smooth. If you have too much just reapply but make sure to wait because thorough drying is essential. Congratulations ! Now you are ready to repaint! Next Tuesday we will go over patching holes under 4" × 4". If you have any questions or a project ideas for future blogs you can email me .
