Hazlet First Responders achieve another CPR Save last evening

New Volunteers on First Aid Squad make immediate impact at CPR call

The American Heart Association has stated the odds of CPR succeeding is about 5%. The Hazlet First Responder team has again beaten these odds. People have begun to expect our Team to beat these odds.

So, last night the Team beat the odds again. Hazlet Police responded to a call for an unresponsive man and Officer Surdi quickly made the assessment; CPR was needed. While calling for assistance, he begun CPR. His quick action probably saved this man’s life.

Hazlet First Aid Squad had members standing by at their Maple Drive building even though it was after 11 PM. First LT. Tom Buckel had Police dispatch call for more manpower while enroute to the scene. CPR is a very physically demanding process to sustain 104 chest compressions a minute. Soon after the call for more manpower, Hazlet First Aid had 8 volunteer members on scene sustaining the patient while paramedics from MONOC began IV medicines.

With Hazlet PD leading the charge to Bayshore Hospital, the patient was saved and as of this morning recovering. Most notable was the performance of new member Ralph Simmons (far left in the picture) as this was his first CPR incident and Ken Baker Jr (not pictured) a 16 year old cadet who both rotated in the CPR chest compression cycles. The training provided by the Squad enabled both to perform like seasoned EMTs during what is always a stressful process.

Hazlet First Aid Squad Chief Schmidt noted, “I cannot emphasize enough how well Hazlet’s team is performing in these all too frequent CPR events. From Police’s rapid response and assessment to our Squad’s CPR skills, our Town should be very proud of its First Responder’s performance.”
