Hazlet Pedestrian Hit, Killed; Police Seek Witnesses

Crystal Vernon, 34, was hit while crossing Route 36 in a crosswalk Monday, the prosecutor's office said.

HAZLET, NJ – A Hazlet Township woman has died as a result of being by a Ford van along Route 36 in Hazlet Monday evening, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni said Tuesday.

Crystal Vernon, 34, was crossing Route 36 east in a marked crosswalk at the intersection with Laurel Avenue shortly before 9:30 p.m. Monday when she was hit by a 2004 Ford Freestar van driven by Margaret Holtz, 67, of the North Middletown section of Middletown.

Vernon was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:39 p.m. Holtz and her passenger, an 85-year-old man, were uninjured, the prosecutor's office said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Fatal Accident Unit, Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART), and Hazlet Police Department.
