HOLMDEL, NJ — Holmdel's Shore Math League team finished the season by taking first place at the Shore Math League competition last week.

The team from Holmdel High School came in first place among eighteen other Monmouth County high school math teams. The meets are held monthly between September and February.

Rivals Manalapan and Freehold, which houses magnet schools of the Freehold Regional HS district, usually give Holmdel a run for the money. But not this year.

Holmdel's first place score of 254 points was well above the second and third place team scores of 219 and 217 respectively. According to Alicia Killean, school supervisor of math and science, Holmdel HS noticed the advanced ability of several of its students in math, and started offering Multivariable Calculus two years ago; that is an AP-level course that is essentially Calculus 3.
