Rabid Raccoon Found In Holmdel Near Hidden Hollow Terrace
Holmdel police warned residents not to interact with wildlife and to keep pets leashed after a raccoon in town tested positive for rabies.
HOLMDEL, NJ - The Holmdel Township Police Department has issued a rabies alert following a confirmed report of a rabies case in a wild animal.
The Middletown Township Health Department responded to a report of a sick raccoon on March 6 near Hidden Hollow Terrace, Holmdel police said. Middletown Animal Control sent the animal for testing, with lab results confirming that the raccoon was positive for rabies.
“Residents should be reminded not to interact with wildlife under any circumstance,” Holmdel police said in a statement. “If you come across a sick or injured animal, keep your distance and avoid all contact. Call the Holmdel Township Police Department immediately.”

In addition, police reminded residents to keep all domestic animals vaccinated with a Rabies shot.
“Do not let your pets run free off leash, even in the woods, to ensure they do not come in contact with wildlife that may be rabid,” police said.

“If you are bitten or exposed to blood/saliva of an animal, contact your physician immediately. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet was exposed to wildlife, even if previously vaccinated. The Holmdel Township Police Department would like to remind everyone that all dogs and cats must be licensed in the township.”
