The Gracie family has trained with many mixed martial arts champions from around the world such as current UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre, current UFC Lightweight Championship Frank Edgar and former IFL Heavyweight Championship Roy Nelson.
“We focus a lot here on building the self-confidence of the students,” said Rolles Gracie, an MMA fighter and trainer, on Wednesday. “The things we teach make them become self confidant, and it brings self-esteem.”
Over 200 people take classes at the location, including children as young as five years old. During training, the room can be noisy and filled with younger kids on one side, and a handful of adults performing drills and grapple work in pairs.
“My grandfather started this whole thing and tried to have as many kids as he could to help spread this art,” said Rolles, referring to the founder of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Carlos Gracie.
A father of two with a third on the way, Rolles is also in training for his next fight, likely late August. “In preparing for a fight you have the technical, physical and strategy of the game,” he said.
“The toughest part is when a fight is close and I have to stay away from teaching because I need to setup a strategy and I have to stay away from this great environment here,” he said.
