IRS Phone Scam Pops Up in Hazlet
Hazlet residents have been receiving IRS scam attempts this week.

Hazlet, NJ - It’s baaaaack. Hazlet residents have been receiving IRS phone calls this week, township police reported Thursday.
The scam has popped up in Middlesex County as well, police there say, and throughout New Jersey. The scammers will identify themselves with common surnames and IRS badge information. They may even be able to recite the last 4 digits of your Social Security number, and will often threaten you will jail time and suspension of driver’s license if you don’t send money right away.
Scammers may even create background noise to imitate a call center. They may even have other people call you, pretending to be with the local law enforcement or the DMV to try to persuade you.

The best response? Hang up, Hazlet police say.
The IRS will only notify residents by mail for any unsettled tax debt. IRS agents will never ask for credit card information, debit card information or pre-paid gift card information.
