Jersey Shore Chinese School Participates in Holmdel Day

Jersey Shore Chinese School participates in the 27th Annual Holmdel Community Day, held on April 21, 2018 at Cross Farm Park in Holmdel!

Every year, Jersey Shore Chinese School (JCSC) sets up booth on Holmdel Community Day with different activities for spectators to enjoy: making paper lanterns, bookmarks, Chinese knots, origamis, spring paper arts and a display of students artworks.

Calligraphy teacher, Mrs. Mei-Lin Chang, is at the table, creating & writing Chinese names, attracting many visitors who are curious to know what their names are in Chinese characters. Children gather around the table making paper lanterns and excitedly waiting in line to request balloon animals. Visitors are welcome to pick raffle sticks to win prizes. Everyone is happy to win prizes as a welcoming sign for the spring season.
Students performance starts at 2 pm in the field at the park for the public to enjoy. With the sound of thundering drum, two colorful lions open the performance. Shaking their heads, wagging their tails, rolling over and leaping across the field, the lions symbolize good luck and bring joy to spectators.
Dancers with beautiful Chinese costumes perform many folk-dances: Silk Road Dance, Whispering Flowers Dance, Long Sleeves Dance and Sword Dance. The visitors watch in awe as the dancers perform gracefully.
Accompanied by intense music, the yo-yo team starts twisting, turning & tossing the yo-yo around thin string, creating a buzzing sound. One student tosses the yo-yo in the air and another student catches it skillfully at the other end. The audiences gasp and applause loudly.
The self-defense students are up next, demonstrating self-defense techniques from beginner to advance level. Reminding everyone that we all can protect ourselves.
Lastly, 11 folk-dancers perform the Jump Box Dance. The dancers raise their hands & feets gracefully following the enchanting music, bringing the show to its climax. Audiences applause enthusiastically and bring an end to JSCS performance.
