HOLMDEL, NJ - A 21-year-old man was able to get out of his BMW before it burst into flames Tuesday afternoon on the Garden State Parkway near Holmdel/Hazlet. The car, a 2000 BMW 5-Series, was in the express lane of the Parkway and was able to pull to the side of the road when it started smoking at about 3 p.m. Tuesday, State Police told Patch.

The car then completely erupted into flames. The man, who gave addresses in both Glassboro and Montclair, was not injured and did not require medical treatment, State Police said. He was not issued any summonses and the car fire was blamed on mechanical failure. The car fire shut down all the southbound lanes of the Parkway Tuesday afternoon and caused heavy delays near Exit 117 (Hazlet, Keyport, Aberdeen).
