Middle School Soccer Team Posts Undefeated Season

WIlliam R. Satz School Girls Soccer Team Go 11-0!

HOLMDEL (November 28, 2016) - The Satz Middle School Girls Soccer team completed an incredible season this November with an impressive 11-0 record! The team, coached by Satz teacher Katherine Cornacchia, not only played an aggressive offense throughout the season, scoring 52 goals, but the team fielded a tight defense as well, allowing just 8 goals to be scored by opposing teams. This season’s success was the result of a “great team effort,” Athletic Director Shane Fallon said. The players put their hearts into each and every game and were able to stay completely focused while also having a “ton of fun” along the way, players said.

This was Cornacchia’s second season as the Satz Coach and she was extremely happy to have twelve of her players from last year back on the field. Experienced players seemed to give the team an advantage over opponents. Returning player Sofia M. (10 goals on the season) as well as Lindsay G. and Julianna B. (7 goals each) led the team’s offense with the most goals on the season.

The team took inspiration from a large, self-named “Support Squad” made up of seventh and eighth grade students. This squad came to nearly every home game and cheered the Hawks on to victory!

Middletown’s Thorne Middle School proved to be the team’s greatest challenge. With both teams coming into the game with undefeated records, the players knew this would be a battle. The Hawks were up 3-0 in the first half of the game. Coach Cornacchia reported that she and the team entered the second half with confidence that they would win the game but the Thorne Middle School team came back and tied the game up at 3-3, sending the game into overtime. With 4 minutes remaining, Lindsay G. took a direct kick on goal with the ball sailing over the goalie’s head for the win.

Coach Cornacchia said she is looking forward to helping next year’s team maintain the impressive winning streak started this season. “Even though we are losing a number of eighth graders, if we work as hard as we did this year we will have another successful season,” she said.
