Time for Some Loyal Opposition on Holmdel Township Committee

Holmdel Township Committee: Challengers Strickland & Singer Offer Us An Opportunity

Dear Patch Editor,

Holmdel Township is faced with several issues that require a greater degree of openness than they receive today. Separate groups of frustrated citizens have filed multiple lawsuits against the town. Residents deserve timely updates (even if it is bad news) on the firehouse that has been closed for two and half years. The public introduction of something as important as a $3.3M bond project warranted an agenda announcement more explicit than simply a “discussion regarding recreation and park improvements.” Taxpayer money has been spent promoting a special interest project. Payment In Lieu Of Taxes were granted to developers, allowing for the diversion of revenues from township schools. And, residents should not need to rely on videos made by an independent citizens’ group as the best source for township meeting minutes.

After much reflection, I have come to realize that the existing, single-party composition of the Holmdel Township Committee is not a good thing. The present representation is proving to be too narrow and biased. Adding some loyal opposition to the committee will be beneficial to the broader Holmdel community. Democratic challengers Karen Strickland and Barbara Singer offer Holmdel an opportunity to do just that. Karen and Barbara are capable, qualified, energetic, and anxious to represent the full spectrum of Holmdel’s citizens.

This election gives Holmdel the chance to press for improved government transparency and much needed improved communication. Adding Karen Strickland and Barbara Singer to the committee will bring welcome diversity and balance to the meetings. A little friendly opposition can be a healthy thing.
