HOLMDEL, NJ — The Holmdel Township Committee announced at the meeting on Tuesday that the Laurel Avenue Bridge might be receiving repair work.

According to the Holmdel Township Engineer, a cement truck that previously crashed into the bridge has caused significant damage and shut down one of the rail lines for New Jersey Transit.

“The county has been working on a large-scale project and in the interim, they are doing some signage improvements,” said the Holmdel Township Engineer.

The township is currently working on a solution to raise the overpass, which was responsible for five car accidents in 2021. “It's going to be a multi-year, expensive, and complex project,” the engineer said.

“Because of the accident, the NJ Transit line was damaged as well. NJ Transit had to close one of the two rails that were on that bridge, and they have been scrambling to try to come up with repairs that need to be made.”

The township is scheduled to have a meeting with NJ Transit on Wednesday.

If the repairs are carried out as planned, Laurel Avenue could be closed for several months, causing significant traffic delays for area residents and travelers in general.

More information will be available soon and will be posted on the township website.
