You have all heard and seen the rhetoric about how adopting the Holmdel Charter Study Commission's recommendations for a fairer, more community focused governing body, is bad for our town. Let's look at the facts: 1)these individuals are arguing against having a governing body where the mayor is directly elected by the voters in a non-partisan format so that outside party bosses cannot dictate who gets elected 2)that also provides the voters with Initiative and Referendum which gives our residents an ability to request a ballot vote to overturn or change an ordinance that is deemed unpopular by a significant number of residents or request a ballot vote on a new ordinance that a significant number of residents deem important. How is this bad?
More power to our residents can only be beneficial to our town. We are fortunate to have an affluent community with many highly educated residents. It is a disservice to the town if we don't have a fairer election system that would embrace this exceptional talent pool. In the past certain individuals have been selected by party bosses to run for office that have their own agenda. An agenda that wasn't focused on what is best for the town but to serve their own interests. This lead to unethical and illegal actions creating turmoil and disruption to our governing body. The individuals arguing against the Charter Study Commission's recommendations don't seem to care about this because the have their own agenda and it's not necessarily about what is best for our town. Our newest elected official, Rocco Impreveduto, even stated at the last Township Committee meeting that he is specifically against the Initiative and Referendum feature. What he is saying is that he doesn't want the residents to have any means of overseeing or interfering with what he wants to do in our town. The residents should be deeply concerned by this very revealing statement.
Reject the fearmongering and lies. There is no conspiracy, progressive takeover of our town or big salary for a directly elected mayor.
