Boys Basketball: Warren Hills Ensures Hopatcong Won't Take Tournament Crown

Chiefs fall, 74-59, despite Matt Tobin's 35 points.

Two things were certain late Wednesday night:

Hopatcong won't take home this year's Hunterdon Warren Sussex title and Matt Tobin could snap his father's school-record 2,091 career points sooner than many expected.

Tobin scored a game-high 35 points as the fourth-seeded Chiefs fell to fifth-seeded Warren Hills, 74-59, at Hopatcong High School. He sank three three-pointers and four free throws as Hopatcong fell to 12-6 after back-to-back wins.

Tobin has 2,051 career points.

Hunter Guard, a junior forward, scored 12 points in the loss. Junior swingman Vinny Marinoni had five points for Hopatcong.

Patrick Jacobson exploded for the Blue Streaks with 30 points, nailing six threes. Darren Pinkman (10 points) and Elmer Hernandez (12 points) combined for 22 points for Warren Hills.

Hopatcong got off to a slow start, falling behind, 18-12, at the end of the first quarter. Then after heading into the third behind, 52-46, Warren Hills outscored the Chiefs 22-13 in the final quarter.
