Bucket Filling: Hudson Maxim School's Theme for 2010-2011

Program meant to build character

Curious what your kids who attend Hudson Maxim School are up to this year? Guidance Counselor Lisa Schuffenhauer sent Patch this announcement of the school's theme for 2010-2011:

The staff at Hudson Maxim School is very excited to bring the concept of "Bucket Filling" to its students this year!

The "Bucket Filling" theme, based on the book "Have you Filled a Bucket Today" by Carol McCloud, is very easy to understand: Everyone carries and invisible bucket that holds our good thoughts and feelings.

When our buckets are full, we feel happy. When our buckets are empty, we feel sad. We want to fill buckets with happiness, and we don't want to dip into buckets and take away good feelings.

As program coordinator, I will will incorporate "bucket filling" into the existing character education curriculum at Hudson Maxim School by focusing on a different character trait to fill buckets each month.

Character education helps schools create a postive atmosphere in order for children to acheive success. It helps students practice and improve on social and emotional skils that will be used throughout a lifetime.

Each day begins with a character thought about how to fill a bucket, which will be shared in the morning announcements. The students try their best to follow the character thought for the day. September introduces the concept of "bucket filling," followed by "filling buckets with respect" in October. Responsibility, caring, fairness, self–control, trustworthiness, honesty and patience are the other "bucket filling" traits that will be celebrated throughout the year.

June will be the time to review how "bucket filling" made a difference! Students who go above and beyond to fill buckets will receive a certificate and be recognized over the intercom for showing great character at the end of each month.

Join our students and staff by trying to fill someone's bucket every day, and don't forget to fill your own!
