Hopatcong Third Graders Hold Poetry And Art Showcase

The Tulsa Trail students showcased their talents on Feb. 28.

HOPATCONG, NJ - Tulsa Trail School was transformed into a mecca of creativity on Feb. 28 when Michelle Tumminelli's third grade class held a Winter Poetry and Art Showcase.

The students had been working on a poetry unit with Tumminelli, and a special winter art project with Jacob Kulik. Each student wrote a Haiku poem and a free verse poem with the theme being winter. The topics included winter animals, snowstorms, winter imagery, and their love, and sometimes, lack thereof, of winter.

While reading their Haiku poems to the audience, their poems were projected behind them on the screen. When it came time to read their free-verse poem, the audience was treated to their snow angel art projects that they created with Kulik. The students drew themselves from the perspective of looking down on themselves lying in the snow, and then painted the snow around them to complete the effect. During the event, the students took a break to have their parents try their hand at writing some of their own Haiku poems.

The children were excited to share what their parents wrote, officials said. After everyone saw the students’ work, children and guests relaxed and enjoyed some winter treats. Tumminelli and Kulik thanked all of the parents, grandparents, and even great grandparents, who attended to share in the students’ success.
