Newton Priest Honored for Service

Christ Church Newton Rector, Robert Griner, was recently recognized for his service to Panamanian residents.

On Sunday, August 12th, in the Central American country of Panama, Newton priest Robert Griner was installed as the Canon Missioner for Companion Relations for the Cathedral of St. Luke’s in Panama City. Griner, who serves as the Rector of Christ Church in Newton, has worked closely with representatives from the Episcopal church in New Jersey and Panama for years. The honor recognizes Griner’s tireless support of many projects throughout the country of Panama, including church reconstruction, youth ministry, and adult mission trips. The ceremony was conducted by the Most Reverend Julio Murray, who was installed as Primate of the Anglican Church in the Region of Central America during a ceremony the previous day.

The ecclesiastical title Canon is reserved for a clergy member on the staff of a cathedral or diocese who is in service to the Bishop. Honorary canons are given to those who have made significant contributions to a cathedral or diocese. Griner is already pursuing his next project in the Central American country, noting, "I look forward to strengthening the bond between the churches of North and Central America.”

Griner, who is active in the recovery community in New Jersey, is currently raising funds for a mission trip to Panama to build a church in honor of Sussex County resident Steven Cagno who recently passed away from a drug overdose. Cagno’s sister, Molly, is also spearheading the effort which will include Sussex County residents in recovery from addiction. The group will rebuild a small church in the remote community of Capira, Panama, where people of all faiths will be welcome.

“We're asking people to help with this important assembly of those in recovery venturing to Panama to make this church a reality,” explains Griner. “A total of $15,000 will be needed.” Contributions can be made on the church website, www.christchurchnewton.org, or by calling 973-383-2245.
