Obituary: Claire (nee: Abernathy) Vander Velde of Hopatcong passed away Friday April 20, 2012 at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown. She was 81. Born in New York NY, she has lived in Hopatcong since 1957. Claire was a member of the Lake Hopatcong Elks Ladies Auxiliary and the Red Hat Society. A homemaker who owned her own ceramic business, she was an oil and water color artist, a creative gardener and an avid reader. A giving person who loved the water (living on Lake Hopatcong), she cherished her children and grandchildren. Beloved wife of the late Herbert W. (1996). Devoted mother of Kenneth Vander Velde and his wife Maureen, Robert Vander Velde, Joyce Koch and her husband Edward and Bruce Vander Velde and his wife Debbie. Dear sister of Doris Ryan, William C. Abernathy and his wife Lorraine and Thomas Abernathy and his wife Carol. Cherished grandmother of Robert, Jeremy, Lee Ann, Caitlin, Ashley, Samantha and Alec Vander Velde. Loving great grandmother of Hannalee.
