Obituary: Joseph E. Herzog, Jr., of Hopatcong, passed away Wednesday June 27 at his home after a courageous battle with leukemia. He was 56. Born in Montclair on February 24, 1956 to Margaret (LaBel) and the late Joseph E., Sr., Joseph resided in Bloomfield and graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1975 before residing in Hopatcong for the last five years. Joseph served in the US Army from 1975-76. He was an Operating Engineer employed by the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825 in Springfield. Joseph was one of the first responders to the September 11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center and remained as a diligent worker there for more than three months. He loved fishing and baseball and was a passionate Yankees fan. Survivors include his wife Colleen (Connors), children, Leah and Jamie Herzog, Shaun and Brian Roberts, Joelle Miley, Joseph Tedeschi and Brittany Gutschmidt, grandchildren, Carter, Jacob, Joseph, Carl, Jaden, Brielle, Gianluca, Matteo and Emilia, mother, Margaret Carpenter, sisters, Donna Zahn, Kathleen Herzog and Elizabeth Esquivel and stepfather Frank Mazzella and wife Diane.
