Report: Hopatcong More Diverse Than in 2000

White population drops; other minority groups rise.

Looks like Hopatcong's becoming slightly more diverse.

Hopatcong's white non-Hispanic population has dropped by more than 6 percent since 2000, according to estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau Tuesday.

The 2000 Census counted 14,792 white people living in the borough, representing 93.1 percent of Hopatcong's overall population (then 15,888 people). But American Community Survey estimates for 2005-2009 show the white population falling to 13,478—or 86.3 percent of the current borough population (15,625 people).

The estimate shows more representation of each minority group it counts in the borough as well. The Hispanic population remained the largest minority group, but grew from 952 people (6 percent) in 2000 to an estimated 1,538 (9.8 percent) in 2005-2009. The black population rose from 310 people (2 percent) to an estimated 864 (5.5 percent). The Asian population grew from 286 (2.2 percent) to an estimated 626 (4 percent).

The United States Census Bureau conducts the American Community Survey yearly to provide up-to-date information about social and economic needs of communities. The figures reflected in the ACS estimates are not official Census counts; the Census is conducted once every 10 years, and data from the 2010 count will be available in the coming months. But the ACS and Census do examine similar demographic data (and in some cases, the ACS provides more detailed information).
