Sparta Liquor License Turns Up for Sale—on Craigslist
Alcohol licenses are hard to obtain in New Jersey.

If you're thinking of opening your own business, here is an idea to consider. Craigslist, the national online bulletin board that offers advertisements for job openings and just about anything one might want to buy, features an interesting ad offering a liquor license for sale.
The advertised item is a Sparta Plenary Retail Consumption License, which is legal to market, according to the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General's Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control Licensing Bureau.
The ad doesn't mention the asking price for the license or note whether the document is attached to any specific restaurant, tavern or watering hole. Patch's email to the seller went unanswered.
The opportunity to obtain a liquor license in New Jersey is a rare one. As the ad mentions, state law, with certain exceptions, has allowed only one retail consumption license for each 3,000 of a municipality's population since 1947.
