Spartans Pride: 5 Unforgettable Athletes From Sparta High School
From local fields to national fame, these stars got their start in Sparta.

Sports run deep in Sparta, and Sparta High School has long been at the heart of it. It’s no surprise some standout talent once wore the Spartans uniform. Today we're celebrating five unforgettable athletes from Sparta High School who made a name for themselves well beyond the hometown field.
1. Dan Miller & Jim Miller – UFC MMA Artists
Brothers Dan Miller and Jim Miller both built their athletic foundations as standout wrestlers for the Spartans before transitioning into professional mixed martial arts (MMA) careers. Dan Miller competed at the highest level of the sport, including time in the UFC’s middleweight division, while Jim Miller became one of the most accomplished lightweights in UFC history, setting records for most fights and wins in the organization. 2. Kevin Rogers – Professional Football Player & Coach (Cleveland Browns)
A Sparta High School alumnus, Kevin Rogers played linebacker at the College of William & Mary before beginning a long career in football coaching. He went on to coach at the collegiate level for decades, developing quarterbacks at programs including Syracuse, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech, where his offenses earned conference titles and national recognition. 3. Chris Jent – Professional Basketball Player & Coach (Los Angeles Lakers)
A Sparta High School legend, Chris Jent went on to play college basketball at Old Dominion University before reaching the NBA as a player in the early 1990s. After playing for multiple teams, including the Houston Rockets and a brief stint with the New York Knicks, Jent transitioned into a successful coaching career. He’s held assistant coaching roles at both the collegiate level and in the NBA, including his most recent stint with the Los Angeles Lakers. (Sources: Sparta Independent, NBA Coaches)
4. Elizabeth Enriquez – Collegiate Rower
After competing at Sparta High School, Elizabeth Enriquez continued her rowing career at Rutgers University, where she emerged as a key contributor in the Scarlet Knights’ varsity boats. As a sophomore, she helped the 2nd Varsity 8 win the Spare Pairs Regatta at the 2025 Henley Royal Regatta and place second at both the Big Ten Championships and Eastern Sprints, contributing to Rutgers’ eighth-place national finish at the NCAA Championships. Her collegiate résumé also includes Big Ten Invitational, Doc Hosea, and Big Ten/Ivy Dust Up victories, as well as recognition as a CRCA Scholar Athlete. (Source: Scarlet Knights)

5. Greg Baty – NFL Lineman (Miami Dolphins)
A Sparta High School alumnus, Greg Baty went on to play college football at Stanford University before reaching the NFL. He was a part of multiple teams before his retirement, including the New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins, typically as a tight end with occasional stints as a long snapper.
