Varsity Letters Might Not Just Be For Athletes In NJ Anymore, If New Bill Is Signed

Do you think non-athletes should be able to earn varsity letters?

A bill headed to the governor's desk wants to open up the ability to earn a varsity letter to those who aren't varsity athletes.

The bill, S-2398, would let schools award varsity letters to students involved in non-sport competitive activities. It would ultimately be the school district's decision whether or not to expand the eligibility for the letters.

It was passed by both the State Senate and Generally Assembly, and is headed to Gov. Christie's desk for final approval.

Senator Steve Oroho sponsored the bill after meeting with a robotics team from Newton High School.

“These students have to train and prepare for their competitions in the same way student-athletes have to prepare for their games,” Oroho said. “The fact they’re focusing on academic competitions rather than sports doesn’t mean they are any less deserving of a varsity letter.”

“Extracurricular activities are an integral part of education,” said Assemblyman Parker Space, another one of the bill's other sponsor. “The benefits of competing with schoolmates against peers from other schools – on the playing field or in the auditorium – cannot be overstated. A varsity letter is a source of pride earned through tireless effort, fierce determination and unwavering commitment. By opening the opportunity for a letter to more students, schools are strengthened and student outcomes are enhanced.”
